The wife of the late actor Chadwick Boseman is seeking control over his estate, three months after his death.
Taylor Simone Ledward, married the Black Panther star in secret last year after four years together, has filed a petition for probate.
Boseman died in August, age 43, after a battle with colon cancer. He died without a will, which is why his wife is petitioning a court to become the administrator of his estate.
According to documents obtained by multiple outlets, the value of Boseman’s estate is estimated at USD$938,500 (about $1.3 million AUD). Many are speculating that this isn’t the full sum of his wealth, after he was paid millions to star in the iconic 2018 Marvel superhero film.
Entertainment Tonight reports that Ledward is seeking “limited authority” of the estate, meaning she will need the court’s permission to sell any real estate.
Boseman is survived by his parents and two siblings, though it’s unclear whether they are seeking any control of his estate.
After filing her initial petition for probate, Ledward must now attend a hearing where a court will decide if anyone else has a right to Boseman’s estate. If contested, these proceedings can go on for months, if not years.
Boseman and Ledward had a very private relationship — they reportedly got engaged in October of last year, and their marriage was only revealed after his death in a statement from his family.
At the 2019 NAACP Image Awards, Boseman thanked his wife from the stage as he accepted an award for his role in Black Panther.
“Simone, you’re with me every day. I love you,” he said. She mouthed back the words, “I love you.”
