It can get confusing, but luckily there’s a new documentary that will help get you up to speed: Framing Britney Spears.
Here’s everything you need to know about the plot, release date, trailer, and what it’s all about.
How can I watch the Framing Britney Spears documentary in Australia?
It’s official. You can watch Framing Britney Spears on Nine on March 2. The documentary will air at 9pm, so strap in!
The documentary was originally streaming on Hulu in the US.
What is Framing Britney Spears about?
The new documentary, produced by the New York Times, is all about the pop star’s ongoing legal battle with her father, Jamie Spears. Britney is currently placed under a conservatorship — and has been since 2008 — meaning she cannot make any legal or financial decisions without her dad’s approval.
Many details of her conservatorship are unknown to the public. In the last few years, fans started the #FreeBritney movement, believing that Jamie is controlling her against her will to take advantage of her and make money.
Framing Britney Spears covers the star’s life over the past two decades, and how the public and the media’s treatment of her –ranging from invasive paparazzi photos to repeated jokes about her mental health problems – has affected her to this day.
An official announcement for the programme reads: “Framing Britney Spears re-examines her career and offers a new assessment of the movement rallying against her court-mandated conservatorship, capturing the unsavoury dimensions of the American pop-star machine.”
Is Britney interviewed in the Framing Britney Spears documentary?
Neither Britney nor any of her family members are included in the documentary. Both of the singer’s parents, her siblings, and her ex-husband Kevin Federline all declined to participate.
Instead, her story is constructed with the massive amounts of archival footage we have of the star.
“Britney is so incredibly well documented and so much is out there that there was an overload of material,” said Johanna Schiller, the archival producer of Framing Britney Spears.
“What was challenging was finding the choice moments in that ocean of stuff and trying to pinpoint material that hadn’t been out there so much before.”
Why is there Justin Timberlake controversy in the Britney Spears documentary?
Framing Britney Spears touches on the three-year relationship that Britney had with singer Justin Timberlake. It doesn’t exactly paint him in the best light, and many fans have since accused him of being misogynistic.
They’ve accused him of slut-shaming, and said that he profited and built a career off of their breakup, while Britney was perceived as a home-wrecker.
