While you may be concentrating on maintaining your physical health, it’s just as important to keep your mental health in check. While there was once a stigma surrounding mental health, it has now become a much more open subject which has allowed many people to seek help and find strategies to cope with the likes of anxiety, depression and stress. If you are currently struggling with your mental health, it’s important to put strategies in place to live a much happier and contented life. ·        Form stable and positive relationships

When you’re feeling particularly low, it’s always a good idea to form solid relationships to prevent loneliness from taking hold. While you may believe it necessary to surround yourself with a large group of people, it is far more advantageous to have a close circle who have your best interests at heart and spark positive energy.

Those who give off negative energy will only bring you down further and cause you to dwell on your worries. You can seek opportunities to meet new people by volunteering, joining clubs and groups or downloading community apps onto your smartphone.

Regular exercise has been proven to boost confidence and mood which can lead to better mental health. When you get the heart pumping, endorphins are released which kickstarts a much more positive mindset. All adults should carry out at least 150 minutes of physical activity per week in the interests of both their mental and physical health. You don’t necessarily have to carry out strenuous activity to exercise; it could be as simple as a brisk walk around the block, dancing or even gardening.

When your mental health takes a turn for the worst, music has been proven as a major pick-me-up as it enhances the happiness hormone dopamine, while reducing the stress hormone, cortisol. Pledging to learn an instrument averts your concentration away from your worries and puts your entire focus on the learning process. In turn, this allows you to experience a sense of contentment and relaxation. What’s more, it can even help you come to terms with painful emotions.

As learning an instrument isn’t always easy, it requires a great deal of patience – especially when things go wrong, but this is a trait that can better help you deal with challenging situations. Getting enough sleep is a key factor in keeping your mental health in check. With adults encouraged to get at least 8 hours of sleep each night, it’s essential to establish a bedtime routine to form a steady sleeping pattern. If possible, aim to cut down on screen time before you hit the hay, as the blue light emitted keeps the brain active by blocking the hormone melatonin which makes you drowsy.
