Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly were the surprise pairing of 2020, going from co-stars to lovers in the span of a couple of months.
The romance between the Midnight In The Switchgrass co-stars came as no surprise to Fox’s husband Brian Austin Green — the Beverly Hills, 90210 star revealed he and Fox had split in late 2019, and even gave the new couple his blessing.

In a new interview with British GQ, Kelly — whose real name is Colson Baker — and Fox went into more detail about how they met, recalling the “weird thing” that happened during their first encounter at a party.
Here’s how the pair’s relationship began and how it has developed.
December 2019: Fox and Green secretly separate after 10 years of marriage and three children.
Although the couple don’t confirm their split publicly, Green later reveals in his podcast …With Brian Austin Green that they indeed went their separate ways in late 2019.
“She said, ‘I realised when I was out of the country working alone that I feel more like myself and I liked myself better during that experience and I think that might be something worth trying for me’,” Green later reveals.

“I was shocked and I was upset about it but I can’t be upset at her because she didn’t ask to feel that way. It wasn’t a choice she made, that’s the way she honestly felt. We talked about it a little more and said let’s separate for a bit… and so we did.”
February 2020: The actress is cast in film producer Randall Emmett’s directorial debut, Midnight In The Switchgrass, opposite Emile Hirsch and Bruce Willis.
March 2020: The cast and crew head to Puerto Rico to begin shooting the film, which also stars Kelly. A source later tells Us Weekly the co-stars “definitely hooked up” shortly after meeting on set.
“They started off as friends and their relationship grew from there. Megan thinks MGK is a really cool guy and their relationship turned more romantic,” said the source.
Production on the film soon halts due to the coronavirus pandemic.
April 2020: Green is seen in the US without his wedding ring as he shops for groceries at the Vintage Grocers in Malibu on April 17.
May 17, 2020: Dating rumours are fever pitch as Fox and Kelly are seen driving around Calabasas, California. People magazine reports they are “spending time together”.
“They have been spending time together at Megan’s house in the past few weeks,” says the source. “They seem to have fun and look happy together. Megan only sees him when the kids are with Brian.”
May 17, 2020: Green shares a cryptic post about butterflies hours after Kelly and Fox are seen out and about. Tellingly, Fox is known to have the words, “We will all laugh at gilded butterflies” inked on her back.
“Eventually butterflies get bored sitting on a flower for too long,” Green writes on Instagram. “They start feeling smothered. It’s a great big world and they want to experience it.”
May 19, 2020: Green broadcasts a podcast titled ‘Context’ in which he confirms the end of his marriage and addresses photos of the Fox and Kelly’ outing.
“I will always love her. And I know she will always love me and I know as far as a family what we have built is really cool and really special,” he tells listeners. “It sucks when life changes and something that you’re used to, that you’ve been doing for 15 years, you try and not get rid of but you change. There’s the unknown aspect… There’s that pit in my stomach… I really don’t want Megan and I to be at odds… She’s been my best friend for 15 years and I don’t want to lose that.”
Green also says Kelly had nothing to do with the marriage breakdowns.
“I don’t want this guy, Colson, who I’ve never met, who she said nothing but really kind things about, I don’t want him to be vilified because nobody did anything wrong,” Green clarifies. “I trust her judgement, she’s always had really good judgement.”

June 13, 2020: Green appears to move on with model Courtney Stodden with the pair seen grabbing lunch at Mejico Grill, a Mexican fast-food restaurant in Agoura Hills. They apparently meet up after chatting online, but a source later insists they are just friends because Green is hoping to reunite with Fox.
“He’s not over Megan by any means. He is just trying to take his mind off things,” a source tells E! News. “He wants to give Megan space and is hopeful they will find their way back to one another. It’s been hard to see her get back out in the dating world but he is trying to fill his time with his kids and friends.”
June 16, 2020: Green shouldn’t hold his breath because Fox and Kelly go public with their relationship. The new couple engage in PDA outside a bar in LA, holding hands and kissing before driving off in the singer’s car, as photographed by the Daily Mail.
June 16, 2020: Kelly tweets that life is imitating art. The singer can’t believe Fox played his girlfriend in his music video and now she was his girlfriend in real life.
“‘I’m calling you girlfriend, what the f—‘ Life imitated art on that one,” he tweets.

“I was playing Megan a lot of the Tickets to My Downfall [album] songs and I had made the call, like, the day before the video. And I was like, ‘Can you come over?’ and we shot the video.”
July 18, 2020: Returning to the place where they first met, Kelly and Fox cosy up together in a new photo with their Midnight in Switchgrass cast and crew, who are all quarantining together on set in Puerto Rico.
“After four months apart! Grateful to be back in #puertorico filming with this amazing cast! Adapting to this new world! All quarantined together,” the film’s director, Randall Emmett, captions the photo.
July 22, 2020: Fox reveals the couple were destined to be together.
Speaking on the Give Them Lala…With Randall podcast on July 22, the actress reveals she quizzed Kelly on astrology when they met on the set of Midnight in the Switchgrass in March, only to discover they were “two halves of the same soul”.
“I knew. I could feel that some wild s–t was going to happen to me from that meeting, but I wasn’t yet sure what. I just felt it like, deep in my solar plexus that something was going to come from that,” Fox says.
“The second that I was in a room with him and said hello to him and looked into his eyes, I knew right away that he was what I call a twin flame. We’re actually two halves of the same soul, I think. I said that to him almost immediately. I felt it right away.”
July 29, 2020: The couple takes things to the next level!
Kelly and Fox become Instagram official after the rapper shares a mirror selfie with his new girlfriend on his social media account.
“Waited for eternity to find you again,” Kelly writes alongside a black-and-white snap of them pulling funny faces and sticking out their tongue.
August 14, 2020: While appearing on an episode of Thirst Tweets for BuzzFeed Celeb, the rapper makes it clear to fans that he is officially off the market.
Reacting to a flirty tweet that reads, “Machine Gun Kelly I just wanna let you know am free this Sunday to go on a date just let me know if you’re free Sunday cause I am free and would like to take you on a date”, the ‘Concert for Aliens’ hitmaker proves how serious he is about Fox.
“I’m locked in already right now. No dates for me. Probably ever.”
September 25, 2020: Megan Fox is featured on MGK’s new album Tickets to My Downfall.
Fox’s voice can be heard on an interlude titled ‘Banyan Tree’. It’s a recorded conversation between the couple that lasts for about a minute and a half.
“Oh, my god. Did you drink a lot of tequila? Is that what it was?” Fox is heard on the track, teasing Kelly. “Do you like, remember the stuff that you do with me? OK, I don’t know ’cause you’re so high or like, you get really drunk, so I don’t know if you remember it.”
November 18, 2020: Fox likens her romance with the rapper to “being in love with a tsunami”.
“The intensity of merging with him is just overwhelming, and the threat it poses is so powerful but so beautiful that you have no choice to surrender with reverence and with gratitude,” she tells Nylon.
November 23, 2020: The couple tick off their red carpet debut from their relationship rite of passage at the 2020 American Music Awards at the Microsoft Theater in LA.

July 7, 2021: Megan Fox calls out criticism about her and Machine Gun Kelly’s four-year age gap.
“You want to talk about patriarchy?” she tells InStyle. “The fact that he’s four years younger than me, and people want to act like I’m dating a younger man. He’s 31, and I’m 35.”
“Granted, he’s lived like he’s 19 his whole life, but he isn’t 19,” the Jennifer’s Body star adds. “No one would blink twice if George Clooney was dating someone four years younger.
“Four years? Go f–k yourself. We would have been in high school together. That’s so ridiculous that women are treated that way.”
July 12, 2021: Megan Fox appears on Jimmy Kimmel Live! to speak about the couple’s recent getaway to Cost Rica to drink ayahuasca, a psychoactive tea, in “a proper setting, with Indigenous people.”
“Nothing glamorous about it,” she tells Kimmel. “It’s all a part of making you vulnerable, so you sort of surrender to the experience.
“It was incredibly intense. Everybody’s journey is different. The second night, I went to hell for eternity. Just knowing it’s eternity is torture in itself, because there’s no beginning, middle or end. So you have, like, a real ego death.”
July 15, 2021: Machine Gun Kelly reveals he was pining for Megan Fox long before they met and started dating.
The Tickets to My Downfall hitmaker confesses he has been such a fan of the actress, he got a Decepticons logo from her movie, Transformers, tattooed on his arm and had a poster of her in his bedroom when he was a kid.
“It was from her GQ shoot,” Kelly says of the poster that hung on the bedroom wall in his house in Cleveland, where he grew up. “So that’s some full-circle s–t.”
“I just want people to understand this is real,” he adds of his relationship with Fox. “I don’t think people get the opportunity to believe in real, great love, and that’s what we have together.”
October 11, 2021: In a new cover story for British GQ, MGK says Megan Fox quite literally saved his life.
“I came from broken homes and I watched love never work,” he says. “Then I grew up where in pop culture they don’t even make romantic movies anymore.
“It hurts my soul that I wasted 30 years of my life not having any desire. Dude, I was down to die. I was good. I was like, ‘All right, got music out there. That’ll hold me down.’ You know, my daughter is the best extension of me and she’s going to be better than I am. And I’ve seen some s–t, so I’m good to go.”
He then adds, “I’ve lost so many friends to suicide. Love gave me a reason to stay here,” before he starts “rambling” and turning to Fox to say, “Please shut me up. I love you.”
In the same interview, the couple describes their bizarre first encounter, saying they began dating in 2020 on the set of Midnight in the Switchgrass. But they reveal they had actually briefly met a few years before at a GQ party in Los Angeles.
“This weird thing happened,” Fox tells GQ. “We didn’t see each other.”
“I don’t remember your face. And I definitely would have remembered his face. I just remember this tall, blond, ghostly creature and I looked up and I was like, ‘You smell like weed.’
“He looked down at me and he was like, ‘I am weed.’ Then, I swear to God, he disappeared like a ninja in a smoke bomb.”
MGK adds, “I think we weren’t allowed to see each other yet. We weren’t supposed to run into each other that night, so our souls, our spirit guides, were luring us away from each other. Because you literally had no face, like that thing from Spirited Away.”
